The Future Politicians - Cosmetics or Content of Character

I thought about the voting drama in the US on the crisis package to save the national, and more over, international financial markets. A European perspective suggests that American politicians rather make populist choices to win popularity in their personal elections, than saving the common good. Democracy is the best polity, but it is not without faults. When thinking about the future of politicians, I don’t know which way we’ll go. The accelerating information flows might suggest that we have better premises to find smart, altruistic, well-meaning politicians, but they could also suggest that we choose our politicians on basis on their looks and their rhetoric; on cosmetics, basically. In the last election for the US presidency (Kerry-Bush), the two candidates were white, middle-aged, married, supposedly heterosexual, billionaire men. As Bruno K recently said: “It is of course a great leap for a racist society such as the US to have a black president candidate, but I will not be satisfied until a homosexual Red Indian is elected." (My own translation). For cosmetics or content of character, in either way, it would be kind of cool!
